Frequently Asked Questions
- How far will we be going out today?
We travel to the fish, which can be 30 miles or more. Our average
trip is 30 to 50 miles, well beyond the normal area covered by
smaller and private craft. Our range puts us out where commercial
fishermen fish. You will rarely see another charter boat where
we fish.
- Will we catch some sharks?
We hope not. We are most likely to catch Grouper and Snapper on
bottom fishing trips; Big Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo and Yellowfin
Tuna on offshore trolling trips. On in shore trolling trips, your
catch will likely be King Mackerel, Blackfin Tuna and Barracuda.
- How's the fishing?
Fishing is always good on the Hey Babe. The crew will work very
hard to put you on the fish. There are times when the catching
is slower than we like.
- How fast is the boat?
We can cruise at 30 miles per hour, but try to stay 25 miles
at most times. The boat is equipped with two 450 horsepower Cummins
diesel engines. The boat has a range of 450 miles.
- What do I bring?
Only bring the food and beverages you need. For cool mornings
and evenings we suggest a jacket or sweater. Also, remember to
bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, boat shoes, and camera. We provide
all tackle, rod and reels. We will provide a cooler for your drinks.
- What about alcohol?
Remember, we are going fishing not drinking. Being offshore in
a boat is no place for excessive drinking. Absolutely no illegal
drugs will be allowed. You can drink all you want at the dock
without paying a charter boat fee.
- Is the mate tip included in the base price?
No, our mates work very hard to please our customers and do appreciate
your tips. Tipping a mate is customary and should be based on
your discretion. 10% to 15% is typical for a good job. Fish cleaning
is not included in the tip. Check with your mate regarding fish
cleaning fees.
- How old is the boat?
This is the fifth season for Hey Babe. Her inaugural trip
was November 1, 2001.
- Where is Apalachicola?
Apalachicola is located on the Gulf of Mexico, south of Tallahassee,
Florida and approximately 65 miles east of Panama City, Florida.
Called by many "The Forgotten Coast", the Apalachicola
area is largely undeveloped and unspoiled. While you are in Apalachicola,
visit the historic town famous of its delicious oysters. Take
some time to stroll around the historical district and admire
the 150-year-old homes now renovated back to their former glory.
- How about bad weather?
The decision to run is made by the Captain at the dock. The Captain
has the right to bring the boat back to port at anytime he feels
that the passengers could be in danger. Hey Babe is a well build
boat which can handle seas in a gale, but our first priority is
your safety and comfort.
- When is the best time of the year to fish?
Every day is a good day to fish. Grouper fishing is at its
best when the weather is cool enough to require a long sleeve
shirt. When water temperature is warm the off shore trolling is
better. Click here for a chart of available
species.
- Do you make up parties or take walk ons?
No. We only do groups and do not mix parties. If you charter
the boat, it's you and your party only.
- How far ahead to I need to reserve my date?
We suggest that reservations be made as early as possible in order
to guarantee a particular date.
- If this is an overnight trip what kind of food will be furnished?
A Continental Breakfast will be served. Lunch will be sandwiches
(u-make-um) and dinner will be freshly caught and prepared for
you.
- Are customers expected to help or assist with the chores?
No, but if you are knowledgeable or want to help, the crew
would appreciate any assistance.
- How do I make a reservation for a fishing trip?
Contact Travis Pruitt, Sr at 770-695-1000 or tps@travispruitt.com.
- Where would I stay while in Apalachicola?
There are many hotels and fish camps in the area. On St. George
Island, nearby, there are rental houses, motels, and condos available
on the beautiful white sand beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. We
can recommend lodging to accommodate all your needs.
- What kind of bait will we use?
We will catch live bait, which many people consider to be as much
enjoyment as fishing for targeted species. We will catch and use
for bait Pinfish, Cigar Minnows, Squirrel Fish, Grunts, Pigfish,
B-liners, and Hard Tails. At times we will also use cut bait or
other dead bait.
